Pirates: A Preliminary Advisory was created by Amerlain
For those that weren't online earlier and missed the excitement, the pirates are now a force to be wreckoned with. According to SirP (who may want to expand on what I write or correct me), there will be two kinds of strategies taken by the pirates ai: 1) What could be called Pirate Raids (similar to the waves of attacks we experienced earlier), where a limited number of pirates units conduct a hit-and-run style attack, and 2) Pirate Colonization (also known as infestation), where a pirates raid force goes planet-to-planet in a system, builds colonies, launches periodic raids, and then, if left unchecked, begins constructing space stations from which even larger raid forces may muster.
What this means overall is that there is now a new dimension to the game, with more surprises and adventures for both new and veteran players alike.
The pirates will also likely help clear the server of inactives.

Thanks for the heads up!
SirP tested wave 50 today from a pirate spawn. With an AI, that could be formidable.

I'm sure that's the idea, as long as they pop like they're supposed to when they're done! That's the whole reason they were taken out at beta to begin with... Intense server lag due to a player-less planet covered in literally thousands of pirates, fun fun.Amerlain wrote: The pirates will also likely help clear the server of inactives.

Perhaps in the event of an unlocked T1 being cleared of players, it would then have the chance to relock as a spawn system (and the pirates in that system would just disappear).
