Hi there, Some of you might know me by my ingame name as Horus and today I would like to introduce to you the After Protocol Graphics Renewal Project

so this is what it is Anxcon and Sirp have brought me in to help give After Protocol a new lease of life, my goal is to establish a new arts team to rework the graphics for bp to bring it more up to date.

about me... well I started working in the games industry at the end of 1997 for a little known company called relic entertainment, I worked there from 1997 to 2009 whilst also working freelance for some other companies which a cannot list due to ongoing nda's. I'm curently working freelance now and therefore able to help with After protocols graphics revival.

So.. my objectives


Ship and Vehicle Redesign

ok so first plan is to re design the ship and vehicle models so that we have more defined looking ship sets. so light fighter through to battleship that share common looks and give the ships a more defined racial look.

for this we will need modlers and even more important texture artists.


next..


Facility and Spacestation Redesign

again we will be looking at re modeling all the structures in game to have a more upto date look, in addition we will be llokg at reducing the footprint size of certain building like residences so that you can design and build colonys alittle easyer instead of sprawling across half the planet.

again for this I will be needing modlers and texture artists.


Planetside textures

ok so planets work funny in bp, the texture you see on the planet in space, is actualy the 2d map of the planet itself wrapped round the planet sphere. so to improve the look of the planet in space we need to work on improving the planet on the ground and its map quality.

for this we need texture people.

and finaly


New intro video

king_gamekeper is currently working on a new splash scren to replace the dark sky entertainment splash screen we have now. once we have the new ship'sthen the plan is to create a new login page also.

Ok so anx Has told me to give you guys a little seek peek at some of the new designs so i thought i would show you the Wip light Fighters and 1 facility.

keep in mind that these are wip and can / will change over time, also we are aware they look rough. sadly to keep performance up we have to keep the poly counts low on stuff like fighters that are spammed out.

you have seen my work... i got to say, i love your new Shield generator facility, fancy.

speakin of fancy, i was thinking of a new set of facilities that help with the city look, send me a FB/Gmail/Hotmail whatever IM and ill explain better

Ooh. Shiny things.

Must admit that I'm no good at all when it comes to modelling. I mainly do a little programming for myself.

I like the new fighter models, though I have to say that I don't like the Cicada. Something about the wings... They're a bit too long, and they're curved. Not really liking it.

That said, it's better than what we have, and I love everything else. Good luck!

yeah the cicada wings aint curved anymore, like i say these are wip and are getting tweeked. i have angled them more downward. and stright, but im trying to make it not look like a viper any more than it already does

well me and Horus have been working on some of the facility prototypes that would go with the new "sector" style facilities and this is what we got so far,


better facility concepts and such would be aprecated, more creativity the better!

for the sake of avoiding complaints about game alteration, it currently would work like a normal facility grid, just graphically represented differently to improve visual effects. we hope to have a randomization code implace that puts a differnet set of buildings (perhaps 20 per "sector" facility) with different locations and facings to keep it mixed up, and we hope also to have it when you place two Housing Facility IV (the ones that most of the material here falls under) would induce another randomization code that mixes the two into one city.

so just a little update for you guys, just so you know i havent given up lol. rl has been busy so i have only made a little progress. however here are some early designs for the 1st ship set, light fighter, medium fighter, heavy fighter, and escort. pictures will be in that order. let me know what you think.

Can anyone see one of my posts with the images in ? for me they are blank but when i go in to edit the text and image links are there.

cheers sniv, it would seem that if i put [img] tags in to link to photo bucket it breaks the whole post, i can only use txt. so for now i will just provide direct links until i figure out why the img tags are broke.

The guys that started this are all gone... I was trying to get something like this off the ground, but so far, nothing. If need be, I can create these models based on the pictures. There's just a weird error with the invulnerability texture when I do it...

I may be able to make some simple stuff in Bryce if that would work. but I know nothing of texturing. I would love to see some better looking hulls myself.

Wish i knew how to do modeling or texturing i would love to help in maybe offering up ideas but those are no good if there is no team to help actually design the things. ive got the cry engine here on my comp. i will look into texturing maybe i might be able to learn xD.

I would really love to see the game get a good fixing to it. new graphics, new designs, new UI, New ships lol the game has a lot of good potential.

Seems to be really good when it comes to texturing and terrain modeling/texturing.

I have done a little bit of modeling/texturing using OpenGL in school. 3D Computer graphics consist of a lot of linear algebra (lots of vectors,matrices lol). Would be interesting to try and come up with some new 3D models for ships. I am more of an interface/database kinda guy though, so I would rather help out with the games capabilites and making the GUI's better.

Also I believe Horus was out of the country for a while and logged on just last week, so maybe his work so far is not completely lost. Perhaps he will see this thread and comment on any updates or a status.

well, if horus comes back that would be good. i just messed with the Cryengine and i think it's really only good for the planets(their terrain/enviroment) >_< so if you want to use it for that i dont mind coming up with some new planet maps or something? xd

I still lurk about. just very rarely. i refuse to work with the game until its rebuilt from the ground up. Its existing state is to chaotic and unbalanced for people to play effectively or fairly. besides, a major major graphics upgrade (if memory serves correct) would require recoding anyway.
